Course Detail: WTPL500 - Lineworker 2

This 90-hour course meets for 9 days for 10 hours per day over a two week period. As a result of this training students will be able to describe the basic layout and identify overhead distribution system equipment in the field, including the functions of various pole types and pole mounted components, and the potential structural, electrical, and climbing hazards associated with overhead distribution; describe the safety concerns associated with, and the type of tools and equipment common in rigging and tensioning work when dealing with both static force and dynamic force loads. Then determine the weight requirements, "safety factor" requirements, and utilize the rigging and tensioning equipment appropriate to replace insulator strings, pole top transformers, safely securing conductors in place on a running corner, changing out a crossarm, and moving secondary lines at appropriate tension; define and explain the three basic stages of high voltage work, as well as safe working distance, minimum approach distance, and load control as they apply to working around high voltage components and during high voltage maintenance and repair work; identify and discuss the function of protective equipment used during overhead line maintenance then demonstrate proper steps for dielectric tests of, and the proper care, storage, and inspection of rubber goods, mechanical jumpers, and hot sticks; locate and identify the major working parts and controls of digger derricks, conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection of the truck unit, describe the safety factors to consider when operating a digger derrick, and then demonstrate using a digger derrick to set utility poles in both open and obstructed areas; perform the job site preparation steps required, then demonstrate manual and equipment assisted methods for safely removing, setting, replacing, guying, and rigging a utility pole; define the term "zone of equipotential," describe the purpose of grounding, then demonstrate how to safely switch, tag, test, and ground a circuit to safeguard lineworkers against fault conditions during maintenance and repair of a circuit.
