Course Detail: WTME111 - Meter Apprenticeship 1A

This 15-week course meets twice per month for 8-hours. Students must attend 40 hours of labs. As a result of this training students will be able to Demonstrate proper first aid procedures and discuss important safety protocols including assessing risk and management of general emergencies, physical and electrical hazards associated with meter work, and the safety procedures associated with meter replacement; define and describe common metering terms and equipment including define basic metering terms, identify the basic parts of a watt-hour meter and basic types of meter bases, and identify different single-phase and self-contained meters. Assess a customer's power usage, conduct a home audit, read meters, and identify potential energy culprits; describe and define basic atomic theory, static electricity, magnetism, conductors, insulators, centripetal force, and the Law of Charges. Then use Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Law, and Norton's, Thevenin's, and Superposition Theorems to calculate current, resistance and voltage in series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits; describe major types of fixed resistors and identify their resistance and power rating by using color codes and determine whether a resistor is operating within its power rating; and describe high voltage AC power using correct terminology, calculate power loss, differentiate between true power, apparent power, and reactive power.
