Hollywood in the 1930's

The 1930s marked the first full decade of sound films in the United States, and Hollywood delivered an extraordinarily rich banquet of cinematic treasures. In this class we'll sample a representative assortment of those riches. We'll revisit the classic comedy of Laurel & Hardy and W.C. Fields, the best of the musical and horror genres, and the explosion of artistry in animated cartoons. We'll witness Hollywood's hard, gritty responses to the Great Depression, and showcase the work of outstanding directors like John Ford and William Wellman. For anyone who cares for sound films as entertainment or as an art form, this course will display Hollywood at its very best
