Course Detail: P_FOUNDINT - Foundations of Intercultural Communications

What does a good leader know about culture and communicating effectively across cultures? How does culture influence notions of self, conflict styles, leadership, or what is expected in the workplace? According to research, knowing the answers to these can help your organization in a number of ways, including driving business through your doors, increasing innovation and productivity, and raising employee satisfaction and retention.

In this two day course you will have the opportunity to learn intercultural tools and skills that will help you:

  • Understand ways culture influences communication in the workplace
  • More skillfully communicate cross-culturally
  • Build better workplace relationships and trust across cultures
  • Understand different conflict styles (using the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory®)
  • Respond to conflict with increased confidence and skill

The University of Southern Maine is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for the SHRM-CPSM or SHRM-SCPSM.

Deb Breiting
Biography: Deb Breiting, is co-founder, owner, and intercultural trainer of Maine Intercultural Communication Consultants (MICC) and hails from Vancouver, Canada. Her parents being originally from Germany and Japan, Deb grew up in a diverse, multilingual home. She has a degree in Linguistics and German and a Graduate Certificate in Intercultural Studies from the University of British Columbia. Now, with almost 20 years of teaching and training experience in a variety of business settings, Deb divides her time between Maine Intercultural Communication Consultants and the New Mainers Resource Center at Portland Adult Education as an Instructor and Program Associate, where she provides cultural and job skills training to foreign-trained professionals. Liz Greason
Biography: Liz Greason a native Mainer, Liz is co-founder, owner, and principal consultant of Maine Intercultural Communication Consultants (MICC). She lived in the Middle East for many years, where she taught students from around the world at the American University in Dubai, with a focus on effective cross-cultural communication. Since returning to Maine, Liz has applied her knowledge of the Middle East, cultural competency, and intercultural communication to help Maine businesses, non-profits, and schools effectively recruit and retain a diverse workforce and serve diverse populations.Liz has also served on the faculty of the University of Southern Maine (USM) and Portland Adult Education. In addition to being trained at the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, Oregon, Liz holds degrees from Mount Holyoke College and Reed College, and a Certificate in Mediation from USM. Liz is also a member of ACE (Association for Consulting Expertise.) Liz  Greason
