Course Detail: O_TOCQU - Reading Tocqueville's Democracy in America

We will read and discuss Tocqueville's classic work Democracy in America. Written in the 1830s by the young French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville after a visit to the United States, Democracy in America has become a timeless classic, now regarded as perhaps the most perceptive and astute description and analysis of American society, politics, and law. It is particularly relevant today as American society is undergoing fundamental changes and American political life is unsettled and contentious. Required book: Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville, (tr., Arthur Goldhammer), ISBN 9781931082549, USM price $37.50.
