Course Detail: O_MUSFM - Film/Discussion Course: Venture into the World of Music

This series will be easygoing, laid-back, and enjoyable! Six of eight films will provide lots of "grist for the mill" for us to discuss character development and the sources of inspiration, setbacks, and limitations that uniquely relate to musicians. The remaining two are documentary films; hence not as conducive to in-depth analysis. Of primary importance: We're going to "sit back and enjoy the music" from a variety of genres: Buena Vista Social Club (Afro-Cuban, jazzy salsa); Immortal Beloved (explores the unresolved mystery of Beethoven's secret love and his descent into deafness); Songcatcher (Appalachian Folk); Electric Church (Hendrix, Atlanta Pop Festival, 10 weeks before his death); The Doors (Jim Morrison); Cadillac Records (Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, Etta James, Muddy Waters); Whiplash (jazz; three Academy Awards, 2015); and Walk the Line (Johnny Cash; one Academy Award, 2006).
