Course Detail: O_MONST - Universal Studios: The Monsters, a Legacy of Horror

From 1923 to 1956, Universal Studios created some of the most iconic literary monsters of the silver screen. They were oft copied, but rarely with the same indelible impact on the motion picture industry. We will revisit Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Boris Karloff), Bram Stoker's Dracula (Bela Lugosi), Curt Siodmak's The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.), H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man (Claude Raines), Putnam's The Mummy (Karloff), and Zimm's The Creature from the Black Lagoon. We will also include excerpts from Abbott and Costello and Mel Brooks' comedic versions of these movie masterpieces. Suggested book: Universal Studios Monsters, a Legacy of Horror, Michael Mallory, ISBN 9780789318961.
