Course Detail: O_CRIME - Dostoevsky: Crime and Punishment and Selected Shorter Works

Reading and discussion of earlier shorter works, including White Nights, Notes From Underground, and The Gambler, all point toward our main focus, Crime and Punishment, one of Dostoevsky's greatest novels. Required books: Great Short Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, ISBN 9780060726461, USM price $16.99; Crime and Punishment, Fyodor Dostoevsky, tr. Pevear and Volokhonsky, ASIN B008QLVMTI (this is the Kindle edition; the paperback is out of print but can be found on amazon.com). Other translations and editions of these books may be used, but the preceding will be referenced in class.

Biography: George Young has previously taught OLLI courses on Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Early Nineteenth Century Russian Literature. He has a BA in English from Duke and a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Yale.
