Course Detail: C_MORALINJURY2019 - Moral Injury 2019

Despite expanding treatment options from the Veteran's Administration and the behavioral health treatment field in the past decade to address the mental health and addiction needs of veterans, the United States continues to struggle with a high rate of suicide among U.S. veterans. Traditional psychotherapy and medication to address anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder have not had a precipitous impact on suicide rates among veterans returning home from war. The concept that people must also heal from wounds of the conscience, moral injury, will be explored for its ability to move veterans to a deeper understanding of trauma's impact on their lives and their ability to move beyond their experiences, shame, and hopelessness.

Goals:

1. To identify the components of moral identity and meaning.
2. To define moral injury and the its various manifestations in U.S. Veteran
populations, as well as former prison inmates,
3. To outline the similarity and differences between PTSD and Moral Injury
behaviors.
4. To review options for individual recovery, collective strategies, and
community acts to impact self-perception and behaviors.
5. To learn and exercise deep listening techniques in dialogues with veterans
regarding their needs and experiences.
