Course Detail: C_WISEMINDS - Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning for K-12

Radiant Beginnings and Wise Minds. Big Hearts. are teaming up to offer a six-week course on Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning for K-12 settings. During this course, educators, mental health professionals, and youth workers will learn to use mindfulness as a tool for social-emotional learning in their work with youth. Each week, we will focus on teaching these skills to young people, in addition to developing a personal mindfulness practice and managing our own stress.

Week one we will introduce the concepts of mindfulness and social emotional learning, with emphasis on the 5 core competencies, as defined by CASEL. Week two will focus on physical mindfulness practices, using the senses and connecting to the body, which supports Self Awareness. Week three we will explore mindfulness of emotions and the breath, which helps with Self Management. Week four we will concentrate on being mindful of our thoughts, which helps with Self Management and Responsible Decision Making. Week five we will learn about how we can be mindful in our relationships to support Social Awareness and Relationship Skills. The last class will be left for reflection and integration projects. Throughout, participants will be required to develop a personal practice and complete practice and reflective work at home.

In addition to class time there will be 12 hours of homework.
