Course Detail: MAPL104 - INDIVIDUAL PIANO LESSONS with Florence Ahn (Virtual)
PIANO with Florence Ahn: Piano lessons for students of all ages and music proficiencies. With her Doctorate in Piano Performance from University of Maryland, Florence provides a structured, relaxed and positive atmosphere for beginning, intermediate and advanced students who want to learn to play piano with skill and purpose. Florence's classes promote the enjoyment of playing piano while challenging students to achieve their full potential.
Learn how to read music notation and provide chords for well-known tunes at the piano. This course will cover 5-finger major and minor hand positions and the 3 primary chords (I-IV-V). Students will be introduced to both simple and compound meter concepts. Piano repertoire will include traditional, popular and arrangements of classical music. No prior experience necessary. Students must have access to a keyboard. All other materials will be provided by the instructor.
This course is designed for students who already have the ability to navigate the piano and established sight-reading skills. Students will review music theory concepts through scales, chords and arpeggios. Aspects of piano technique will be catered to the repertoire chosen. Piano repertoire will include classical, popular and arrangements of jazz standards. Students are encouraged to bring pieces that they are currently working on or are interested in learning.
This class is designed with the purposes of developing the performer and artistry of each individual. Students must have taken at least 5 years of piano lessons and have an interest in studying works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary music from the Western Musical Tradition. Nuances in phrasing, dynamics, pedaling will be discussed in relation to practice strategies that will achieve performance readiness. Students may bring works to study, or works will be assigned at the recommendation of the instructor.

- PRACTICE: Progress is highly dependent on consistent practice. It's important to practice every day if possible, even if it's for a short period of time.
- ATTENDANCE: Come ready to work and be prompt attendance for all virtual lessons. If you are ill, be sure to either email or call to cancel your lesson beforehand.
- TIME: We recommend you take an introductory lesson if you are unsure this is right for you. If you are ready to jump in with the bundle plan, the first class will be a 45 minute introductory lesson.
- REQUIRED MATERIALS: Laptop, tablet, or phone that can run the app "Zoom." Stable WiFi.Students must have access to a keyboard. All other materials will be provided by the instructor.
Florence Ahn is an active teacher and accompanist in the Maryland and DC area. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance in 2002 from the University of Toronto, a Master's in Piano Performance in 2005 from the University of Maryland and a Doctorate in Piano Performance in 2018 from the University of Maryland. In 2019, she released a CD titled: "A Survey of Czech Piano Cycles from Romanticism to Modernism (1877-1930)" through Centaur Records. Currently, she is in the Masters in Teaching Program at UMBC. She lives in Silver Spring with her husband and 2 sons.
