Bill McCauley taught himself to play chess when he was in the 4th grade. What started as a pastime morphed into an avocation and finally became a full-fledged obsession. In high school, he was on the school chess team and started to participate in tournaments sponsored by the U.S. Chess Federation. He quickly earned an impressive chess rating.

Bill organized and ran a chess team while he taught at the German International School Washington, and later, at Folly Quarter Middle School in Howard County, he formed and ran a chess intramural club. He taught for several years with a company that offered chess club instruction at many local elementary schools. He was also the lead instructor at the Summer Chess Academy offered by the Institute of Extended Learning at UMBC in the summer of 2019. The 2020 and 2021 camps were unfortunately sidelined by covid, so Bill is thrilled to return in 2022!

As a retired teacher, Bill is able to combine his love of chess with his ability to engage students in a fun and beneficial way. He looks forward to working with students who want to learn chess, improve their existing abilities, and truly excel at the game!
