Course Detail: ARSA104 - Art of Sound-Animation (Middle & High School)
Transform your drawings and personal objects! Bring them to life through dynamic stop-motion animations and learn the basics of sound design, storytelling and the fundamentals of story-boarding. This workshop will introduce the essence of video, animation and sound production that will result in a final animated group project.
This introductory workshop ensures personal attention and encourages group collaboration in all facets of film-making and animation, including basic screenwriting, visualization, narrative development, and the entire production and post-production process. Students will be introduced to the basics of studio lighting, pixilation & stop-motion animation, computer animation, and professional video and audio production.
Students will have the opportunity to shoot footage throughout UMBC's campus, as well as tour the Imaging Research Center, Library Gallery, and the Keith R. Porter Imaging Center (Biology Department), Engineering and other departments that might use imaging in their practice. The UMBC Seeing Science project is an example of this interdisciplinary cross-over between the arts and science. A list of contemporary and historical animators will be screened during this workshop, presenting a brief history and context to this exciting artistic career.
Students are encouraged to bring any of their own equipment such as a cell phone camera, DSLR, video camera or sound equipment. However, this is not required as we will have everything you need to create a completed work during the two-week workshop. Students will be able to use the artwork produced in the class as part of their college application portfolio or other applications.
LUNCH: Students staying for full day or for both morning and afternoon sessions can bring or buy their lunch. All students will eat lunch on Campus in The Commons, a small food court.
