Course Detail: ENMG691 - THE DIVERSITY EQUITY AND INCLUSION MINDSET IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

The DE/I Mindset in Project Management
This course provides an overview of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE/I) in Project Management. This course will focus on incorporating and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, tools, and techniques into the five (5) major project management process groups (initiation, project planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing) outlined in Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMBoK Seventh Edition). The course will balance the art and science of project management with a strong emphasis on nontechnical skills, growth mindset, and systems needed in leading projects and project teams. This course will combine lecture presentations, group project-based assignments, group discussions, individual case study, and exams.

Course Goals 
The primary goal of this course is to help students incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE/I) principals, tools, and techniques in project management throughout the initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closeout phases. A secondary goal of this course is to develop students' nontechnical skills, growth mindset, and systems needed in leading projects and project teams.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Gain a foundational understanding of project management principals, tools, and techniques, including the five (5) major project management process groups. 
  • Gain a fundamental knowledge on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE/I) principals, tools, techniques, terms, and definitions. 
  • Develop a growth mindset by recognizing and identifying the beliefs, behaviors, and practices that get in the way of managing projects and project teams. 
  • Identify a system approach to incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE/I) principals, tools, and techniques in project management process groups.

Class Participation
Regular class attendance is an expectation of all students. Each student is expected to participate in all class discussions and group activities. 
  1. Discussion Questions: The discussion questions presented address the various topics covered throughout this course. You are expected to provide complete and thoughtful responses to these questions-demonstrate your comprehension of the course material. 
  2. You are expected to post a response to the discussion question. 
  3. You are expected to reply to a classmate's response.
Project 
Each student will develop an DE/I SWOT Analysis and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Students are required to incorporate/integrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE/I) principals, tools, techniques, and strategies into their DE/I SWOT Analysis and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).  
Inclusive Management Plan Requirements: 
  • Create an DE/I SWOT Analysis 
  • Create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  • There is a ten-page limit (Arial,12-point font, 1" margins) for the write-up
This course is not limited to UMBC students and is open to the general public. This course is offered in our Live Online Synchronous format. All lectures will be recorded to accommodate international students and professionals with challenging schedules. This course may be eligible for transfer credit.
