A dynamic summer program for creative high school students.

Courses

This course for aspiring filmmakers and the cinema-curious decodes the strategies, forms, and techniques of narrative filmmaking through examples, screenings, discussions, and hands-on filmmaking projects. With the guidance of a professional filmmaker, you'll work with tools and techniques available in your environment to entirely reconstruct a scene of your choice. Through this process, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how to create short films with cinematic values.

Learn to use your sketchbook as a visual journal for observation and invention. You'll experiment with markers, paint, paint pens, ink and cut paper, and virtual field trips encourage you to work from life and your imagination.

Learn to develop believable worlds and refined stylizations that can be applied to a variety of narrative projects like comics, children's books, animation and live-action works. Focus not only on the characters that would inhabit these worlds, but also the design of environments, props and other world-building visuals that make up a fictional world and make it more believable. This course will help you dissect and focus on each element, including the writing that goes into developing and creating a fictional world.

Create and critically evaluate your visual arts college application portfolio. Learn strategies for presentation, what colleges look for, and tips for photographing and editing work for a digital portfolio. Experiment with a variety of media and learn to utilize the resources around you to develop new work. Conclude the class with a portfolio review with an admissions counselor to assess your portfolio's strengths and areas for growth.

How can a story be conveyed in the most impactful way? Learn how to use images and visual elements to communicate ideas and tell stories more effectively. You'll explore the craft of visual storytelling by dissecting non-traditional story forms ranging from comics to photojournalism to digital multimedia formats. This course focuses on writing exercises, drawing, mapping, and storyboarding. At the end of the course, you'll have concept drawings and finished editorial pieces that showcase your visual voice for use in a portfolio or future project. This class is perfect for students interested in film, animation, illustration, photography, writing, graphic design, game design, or any form of visual storytelling.

Examine how text works with sequential images to create stories and worlds in comics, cartoons, graphic novels, motion and other forms of illustrated text. Delve into concepts like dialogue and personal narrative as you draw and create comics to be shared and published online. With the assistance of two instructors, Melissa Lomax and Christian "Patch" Patchell, you will walk through the basics of visual storytelling while honing your personal voice. Students will be encouraged to share their work through the Webtoons page created by UArts Pre-College and on other platforms.
