Course Detail: DNA - Science Behind Your DNA

Scientists from the University of Michigan will present a hands-on lesson on the topic of Genetics. Participants will learn the ins and outs of the human genome, including what makes us each unique, how traits are inherited, and how Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) help identify genes responsible for complex human disease. Hands-on activities include DNA isolation from saliva, where participants see what DNA looks like and how scientists isolate it, and a GWAS activity, where participants work together to identify a genetic marker contributing to human disease. A final discussion will touch on the use of commercialized genetic tests for ancestry, personalized medicine, and will be open for questions to the scientists. See our sister course on the legal ramifications of giving up your DNA as well(293) "Stolen Blood."
