Course Detail: 302WRIGHT - 302 Frank Lloyd Wright in Michigan LOCATION OF CLASS CHANGED TO C224

When one thinks of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, Oak Park, Illinois, Taliesin in Wisconsin and Arizona, and New York come to mind. Yet his domestic architecture is well-represented in the state of Michigan with 33 constructed buildings and more designs that were not executed. These represent the range of his ideas for residential architecture, from early in his career through his later years. This lecture will cover examples of his Prairie-style architecture seen in the Meyer May House in Grand Rapids to his more affordable Usonian designs meant for the middle class, examples of which are in Galesburg and Kalamazoo. Variations in materials used, client demands and budgets, building sites and technology will inform this consideration of known and not-as-well-known Wright houses in the state. The class will be led by Susan J. Bandes, Professor Emerita of Art History, MSU and author of Mid-Michigan Modern: From Frank Lloyd Wright to Googie, MSU Press, 2021 (copies will be available for purchase).
