Course Detail: 277HOG - 277 History of God - Part 2 (Human Interpretation)

In this session we will continue our pursuit of the complex and eternal debate concerning the "Existence of GOD or GODS." We will focus on the change from premodern times before the scientific revolution in the 1700s in which religion was based on ideas of revelation and sacred texts to modernity which introduced philosophy with logic and critical thinking. Our foundational document will be The Great Courses titled "Skeptics and Believers: Religious Debate in the Western Intellectual Tradition" by Professor Tyler Roberts. We will augment this with other course materials and hopefully be prepared to modify direction based on group discussion. For example, this complex topic can generate discussion on religion as story (myth), Philosophy of religion and its sister but different religious philosophy, specific religious traditions, etc. The purpose is to engage the group without the restraint of schedule. No promise to find an answer to the discussion topic; however, a promise to "tickle the gray matter" is expected.
