Course Detail: 251MOLECULAR - 251 From Sewers to Beaches: Using Molecular Methods to Measure Pathogen Levels in our Community

Did you know that for over a decade, SVSU undergraduate students have used rapid DNA testing to determine whether beaches in the Saginaw Bay Watershed should be closed due to fecal contamination? This testing has become so advanced that they were called upon by EGLE at the start of the pandemic to adapt their methods for quantification of SARS-CoV2 RNA in wastewater. In this course you will learn about that process and how it has evolved from monitoring beaches to helping track the spread of COVID.
