Course Detail: VEM1 - Introduction to Viterous Enamel on Metal

The application of powdered glass on metal is an ancient technique that can transform the surface and color of your work. This course will introduce you to the vast world of enameling. You will learn how to prepare metal surfaces to accept enamel, and kiln fire and torch fire techniques while sampling a variety of enamel application methods. You should bring a basic tool kit that includes a saw frame, saw blades, needle files and safety glasses. Copper sheet, enamels, and additional materials and tools will be supplied. Prerequisite: Foundations Level I or instructor approval.

Bulletin

This course will be hosted on the SIUE Main Campus in the Metalsmithing Studio, Art and Design East, Room 1209. If you requested/paid for a parking pass, one will be emailed to you at least 2 days prior to the course beginning. Masks are not required to be worn while inside all buildings on the SIUE Campus, but you may do so if you prefer. Please complete the COVID vaccination/negative test questionnaire that will be included in the second confirmation email. All individuals participating in an in-person course on the SIUE campuses must either have a COVID vaccine or submit weekly negative COVID tests.
