This conference will help learners recognize signs of progression into the final stages of dementia, use effective strategies for helping care, adopt techniques for reducing resistance to care, and develop better observational skills to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges occur later in the disease process. It will emphasize the value of matching helping behaviors to the person's needs and retained abilities to promote a sense of connection to help in meeting needs. A review of common reflexes and behaviors that signal late stage and end of life will be explored. The importance of pre-planning and using the plan to make choices and decisions will be discussed. Also, the importance of focusing on the person, not the body, as the most important part of care will be addressed, as well as being able to finally give the person permission to go without 'giving up' on them.
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:
1. Identify the degree of involvement theperson with dementia is experiencing late in the disease
2. List several nonverbal and verbal techniquesfor effectively assisting someone with dementia at the end of life
3. Describe the importance of helping at anappropriate level rather than neglecting or over-assisting individual
