DESCRIPTION:Title: Washington in Our Wallets\n\nDescription: First offered in 2017, Washington in our Wallets returns with new material examining the Trump tax changes, enacted as the 'Tax Cuts and Jobs Act' (Trump 1) in 2017 and the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' (Trump 2) in 2025. Although what we know today as the federal income tax dates only to March 1, 1913, we will go back about 150 years to the dispute between the American colonists and the British government over Britain's attempts to tax the colonists, which was a major precipitant of the American revolution. We'll look at early attempts by the new American republic to finance itself and income taxes imposed during the Civil War and the 1894 income tax, which was held unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and led to the Sixteenth Amendment and the modern income tax. We'll trace the development of the income tax from essentially a supplementary tax on a relatively few high income taxpayers to a more broadly based tax that accounts for the bulk of federal tax revenue.\n\nSchedule: Wednesdays, July 29, Aug 5 and 12\n\nLocation: Synchronous Online Classes held online following set schedule.
