DESCRIPTION:Title: What is Stoicism?\n\nDescription: To be 'stoic' today means to be dispassionate or resigned in the face of adversity. But ancient Greek and Roman Stoicism was a vibrant worldview and way of living for more than 500 years, and its influence extended well into the Christian era. This presentation will introduce participants to the Stoics's concept of and belief in the cosmic Logos, their 'cosmopolitan' vision of human equality (regardless of race, sex, class, language, or birthplace), their materialist understanding of the soul, and their daily practices of living 'according to nature.' There will be ample time to discuss and evaluate the Stoics's emphasis on reason over emotion, their assumption that the cosmos is well-ordered, and other aspects of their practice and beliefs, as well as to consider whether these views have any bearing on or applicability to our lives today.\n\nSchedule: Tuesday, Dec 8\n\nLocation: TBD - UR Campus TBD - UR Campus Richmond VA 23173
