Herbaceous Plant Identification

Herbaceous plants occupy prairies, wetlands, forest understories, and many other habitats. The identifying characteristics of this diverse group of plants are often quite different from those of woody plants. You'll learn the fundamental herbaceous plant identification characteristics, as well as some specialized ones for select native and cultivated species. Focus will be on broad-leaved plants rather than grasses, sedges, and rushes.

Instructor:	Michael Hagen Michael Hagen Michael Hagen Michael Hagen is Curator of the Native Plant Garden and the Rock Garden at NYBG. He is also Institutional Conservation Officer for the Center for Plant Conservation, and he represents NYBG on the steering committee of Local 59, an organization dedicated to improving the native plant supply chain. Previously he served for almost 13 years as Staff Horticulturist for Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring, NY and was Garden Manager at Rocky Hills, in Mt. Kisco, a preservation project of the Garden Conservancy. He is also an adjunct professor at Westchester Community College where he lectures on sustainability, native plant propagation and gardening with native plants.
