Course Detail: EKG - Electrocardiograph (EKG/ECG) Technician

This 3-week hybrid (online and in-person) Electrocardiograph (EKG/ECG) Technician program will prepare participants to sit for the National EKG/ECG Technician Certification Exam.  

EKG Technician is responsible for performing diagnostic tests before an after operations to assess patients' heart rhythm and rate. EKG's may be performed during physical examinations on patients with a history of heart disease, and when patients are experiencing chest pains.  They are ordered when the physician deems them necessary.

Class Schedule:

Online: M, W, Fri (online lecture) 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM for 3 consecutive weeks

In-person Clinical: Saturdays 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM for 3 consecutive weeks

Upon successful completion of the EKG Program, students will be able to:
  • Identify and describe the Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology of the major body systems with an emphasis on the Cardiovascular system
  • Describe and explain the Electrical Physiology of the Heart
  • Identify and discuss medications that are associated with the Cardiovascular system.
  • Understand and demonstrate the basic skills to accurately take a patient's vital signs including a Blood Pressure measurement.
  • Identify and Perform basic EKG Skills. This includes utilizing various EKG machines, such as the 3 lead, 5 lead, and 12 lead EKG machine.
  • Identify and discuss Waveforms, calculating heart rates, Determining Heart Rhythm, and Einthoven's Graphic Identification system. 
  • Develop the ability to recognize Artifacts on an EKG and understand the errors and prevent them.
  • Recognize arrhythmias.
  • Students will learn to describe Pacemakers, name the chambers of the heart that pacemaker may pace, explain the ways in which pacemakers can initiate impulses, and assess pacemaker function.
  • Students will learn about the Holter Monitor, it's monitoring and Placement on patients.

Schedule: Every week Monday, Wednesday, Friday ONLINE from 6pm-10pm. MANDATORY IN-PERSON clinical practice on Saturday from 9am-1pm.
