This course supplies basic information including terminology used in describing drug action, physiological responses to drug use, patterns of drug use, and current understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of maladaptive, compulsive patterns of drug use, i.e., addiction. Physical consequences of acute and chronic use will be discussed and treatment interventions including appropriate medications for a variety of substances including; tobacco, benzodiazepines, opiate medications, stimulant medications ( amphetamines, methylphenidate, synthetic cathinones ), phencyclidine, club drugs including MDMA, ketamine, GHB, hallucinogenic plants and chemicals including LSD, peyote, and psilocybin mushrooms over the counter medications (cough medicine etc. ) household products (inhalants), synthetic marijuana, and caffeine will be reviewed. 27 Hrs
