Overview
Healthcare delivery and education environments are dynamic, complex and at times uncertain. Coaching has proven successful facilitating growth and improvement for individuals, teams, and organizations. Emotional and social intelligence, clinical teaching, team development, and building the next generation of leaders all require the strengths and the competencies of coaching.    

This innovative 2-day in-person workshop, facilitated by a team of executive coaches and educators, will:

  • Discuss why the competencies of coaching are important for healthcare educators and leaders.
  • Differentiate the unique and critical skills of coaching from other skills such as mentoring, counseling, sponsoring, educating or consulting.
  • Introduce a coaching model and provide opportunities for demonstration and peer learning labs guided by executive coaches.
Participants will leave the workshop with an increased comfort and skill level in facilitating a coaching conversation and an individual plan for applying coaching in one's setting.

Learning Outcomes
  • Explore coaching skills in light of International Coaching Federation competencies.
  • Review the arc of a coaching conversation.
  • Apply skills in coaching to healthcare and education scenarios using the GROW coaching model.
  • Identify ways that coaching fits within your role and opportunities for application.
  • Develop a coaching action plan to apply in your setting after the workshop.

    • What is coaching and why is it important in healthcare?
    • Context for coaching in your setting.
    • Coaching theories, competencies, and approaches.
    • Challenges and ethics in coaching.
    • Flow of a coaching conversation.

    Day 2
    • Moving from theory to practice.
    • Learning labs for skills in coaching and the coaching conversation.
    • Pulling it all together: peer coaching practice.
    • Refining your coaching plan.
    Keynote Speaker

    Richard E. Boyatzis, PhD
    Distinguished University Professor
    Case Western Reserve University, Departments of Organizational Behavior, Psychology, and Cognitive Science

    Dr. Boyatzis has launched several landmark studies on the competencies of coaches that predict client change. He is the author of more than 200 scholarly articles and 75 practitioner articles on coaching, leadership, competencies, emotional intelligence, neuroscience and management education. His 9 books include: The Competent Manager; the international best-seller, Primal Leadership with Daniel Goleman and Annie McKee; and Resonant Leadership, with Annie McKee, and Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion or Lifelong Learning and Growth with Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten. 

    Case Presenter

    Kerri Palamara, MD 
    Director, Center for Physician Well-being, Department of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital

    After 8 years as an Associate Program Director and Primary Care Program Director at MGH, Dr. Palamara was asked to lead the Center for Physician Well-being for the Department of Medicine at MGH as the inaugural director. Her academic work focuses on physician coaching, clinician well-being, and faculty development.  Dr. Palamara leads the American College of Physicians "Physician Coach Training Program", which focuses on training physicians to integrate coaching techniques into their quality improvement and well-being initiatives.

    In support of improving patient care, MGH Institute of Health Professions is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

    Nursing
    MGH Institute of Health Professions designates this activity for 15.0 contact hours for nurses. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME and ANCC.

    Physicians

    Social Work
    As a Jointly Accredited Organization, MGH Institute of Health Professions is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. MGH Institute of Health Professions maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 15.0 clock hours for continuing education credits.

    Psychology
    Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs. MGH Institute of Health Professions designates this activity for 15.0 CE credits.

    Physical Therapists (Massachusetts)
    Approved by the MA Physical Therapy Association for 15.0 CE hours.

    Cancellation Policy
    Full refund, less administration fee of 5% if cancellation is received prior to October 25, 2022. To cancel, send your cancellation request to the Office of Continuing and Professional Development (IHP CPD). Refunds will be processed based on the original form of payment. Cancellations received on or after October 25, 2022 will not be eligible for a refund.

    Cancellation of event: In the very unlike event that IHP CPD cancels or postpones the activity due to circumstances beyond its control, IHP CPD's liability will be limited to refund of paid registration fees.

    Change of event: In the event that IHP CPD must convert the program to virtual, participants will be immediately notified.
