Description

The importance of knowing basic process engineering for practitioners of Process Instrumentation and Control (I&C) is vital in being able to implement I&C systems correctly. In this course, you will learn the basics of Process Engineering as they relate to I&C.

  • The different elements of PIDs including: pipes, valves, automatic valves (switching valves and control valves), containers (vessels and tanks), fluid movers (pumps, compressors, blowers, fans), heat exchangers, pressure relief devices, insulation and tracing, and also isolation methodologies for ease of maintenance
  • Process engineering concepts and calculations including: different material phases (solid, liquid and gas), fluid properties, physical operations vs. chemical processes, flow of fluid in pipes, incompressible vs. compressible flow, hydraulic calculations (pipe pressure drop calculations) for the purpose of control valve hydraulic calculations, relief valve hydraulic Calculations, etc.
  • Process discipline deliverables including: BFD, PFD, P&ID, H&MB Table, process design criteria and process design basis, process description, process control narrative, and cause and effect table
  • Practical material selection for sensors, control valves, and relief devices.

Moe Toghraei
Biography: Moe Toghraei has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering (1990) and a Master of Science in environmental engineering (1998). He is also a Licensed Professional Engineer. Moe has more than 20 years' experience working in different process industries, including oil upstream, refinery, petrochemical complex, water and wastewater treatment (municipal and industrial), and even food industries. He worked in different phases of projects, including design (basic engineering and detailed engineering), construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning, start-up, and operation.
