Course detail: Firearms Instructor School - Handgun

Course Description: 
The Firearms Instructor School - Handgun is intended to increase the teaching skills of the firearms instructor. All course material will be presented at the instructor level. This is NOT a basic firearms seminar. Only officers who are full-time certified officers and who are or will be assigned firearms training duties should attend. Officer attending MUST complete the KLETC Instructor Development School before attending this course. Officers attending the course will be required to achieve a minimum score of 90 percent with their duty sidearm on the KLETC Qualification Target, pass the final written exam with a minimum score of 80 percent, demonstrate proficiency with the double-action auto-pistol and demonstrate the ability to prepare and deliver a presentation on some aspect of firearms instruction. . 

As noted in the description you will also be required to pass firearms proficiency testing. The score required is 270 points out of 300 total. It is a 60 round course and is contained as an attachment. You will have 4 attempts to pass the firearms proficiency tests within the week of class at various times. I highly encourage you to practice and prepare yourself for the proficiency test as it is required. Be prepared to be outside a majority of the week and that you bring any equipment you feel will be beneficial. 


Coaching basic students will occur within the week of training and will be supervised by KLETC range staff. If you are unable to attend training please let Jenny Caywood and myself know as soon as possible so we can make the necessary arrangements and changes.



Equipment Requirements: 

  • Duty double-action auto-pistol with 3 magazines 
  • Duty Gear
  • Flashlight
  • Laptop 
  • Towels and washcloths 
  • Pillow and pillowcase 
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Ballistic vest (if issued) 
  • Athletic shoes or lace-up boots (NO pull-on boots will be worn during movement courses) 
  • Gun cleaning equipment 
  • 50 rounds of duty ammunition (NO reloads, +P or above) 

All other ammunition (9mm, .40 and 45)will be provided by KLETC. If your ammunition requirement is not listed, you must furnish your own ammunition: 800 rounds/Auto-pistol. Loaner weapons are available through the KLETC Rangemaster if arrangements are made prior to the beginning date of the school. 

Agencies are limited to send two (2) officers.

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online t: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

Bulletin

For those attendees who desire to come in the night before, please come to the Main KLETC Entrance marked on the map, it is near the flag pole and marked with a large "A". Checkout time is 8:00 AM on your departure day or last day of training, please have all personal items removed at that time.

All lodging attendees will find an envelope containing their room key at the front desk in the main lobby reception area. Sheets and a blanket are furnished for our guests. Items you may wish to bring: Alarm Clock, Bath Towels, Wash Cloths, Soap, Shampoo, Hair Dryer, Pillow and Pillowcase, and an Extra Blanket.

Weapon Safety - KLETC adopted a new weapons policy effective July 1, 2017. The concealed carry of handguns shall be permitted on the KLETC Campus, including all buildings and public areas to the maximum extent possible while ensuring the safety of the staff, students, and guests in a training environment. The open carry of firearms shall be prohibited unless necessary for instruction in an authorized training program. Nothing in this procedure is intended to interfere with a law enforcement officer performing his or her official law enforcement duties on the KLETC campus. Law Enforcement officers attending continuing education or basic training classes, or attending meetings or other academy-related events, are permitted to carry their firearms while on the KLETC campus. Law enforcement officers carrying a firearm on the KLETC campus must possess appropriate agency identification. ABSOLUTELY NO student, instructor, or role player is allowed to carry any firearm into an area where signage stating "no live weapons or ammunition is allowed in training safety areas" is present. You are responsible for ensuring that your firearm is secured in a safe, reasonable, and acceptable manner while on the KLETC campus. Questions regarding this policy for continuing education students, instructors or guests may be directed to the KLETC Assistant Director for Professional Development and Continuing Education.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: A full refund of lodging fees will be available if requested in writing coned@kletc.org and received by KLETC ten days prior to the beginning date of the seminar. After that date, but prior to the seminar, refunds will be made, but a $25.00 administrative fee will be charged. No refunds will be made after the starting date of the seminar. Cancellation Policy

A refund less a $25.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for all cancellations made in writing prior to 10 days before the start of the event. After that time, no refunds will be made.
