Opioids are powerful drugs that can relieve pain but also impair breathing, leading to brain injury and death in overdose. The rising number of deaths involving opioids is referred to as the opioid epidemic. This class discusses the epidemiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and treatment of opioid use.
Core Competencies
- Participants will define addiction, choose the correct definition of an opioid, select from a list of examples of opioids and symptoms of opioid use.
- Participants will also describe possible consequences of opioid use and tools used to combat the effect of opioid misuse.
