Course detail: Child Passenger Seat Technician

This course is designed to educate individuals who wish to become child passenger safety technicians. Participation in all course activities and successful performance on both examinations and skills evaluations leads to national certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician, CPST. The National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (NCPSCTP) will be used for the class, including all the practical and written testing procedures. The classroom instruction and checkup event will be held at the Parsons KLETC Regional Site at 2103 Corning Ave. in Parsons, KS. This CPST certification course is three days long and combines classroom instruction, hands-on work with car seats and vehicles, and a public/community safety seat checkup at the end of the class. This is a physically demanding class. Students will be literally climbing in and out of a variety of vehicles, outdoors during the hands-on practice exercises and while participating in the public checkup event. Dress should be casual and appropriate to the weather. 

Course Objectives: 
1. Select appropriate child restraints and secure children in vehicle restraint systems 
2. Install child restraint systems in multiple types of vehicles 
3. Teach others how to install restraint systems in vehicles according to CPS best practice guidelines 
4. Organize and coordinate a child restraint system checkup event 
5. Respond appropriately to issues related to the role of child passenger safety technician 
6. Serve as a resource to the community/state/organization relative to child passenger safety 

Instruction and evaluation provided by: Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office (KTSRO)

Instructional Methods: Teaching strategies include lecture, hands-on practice and group discussion. 

Who Should Attend: This course is designed for anyone who would like to educate parents on keeping children safe while they are being transported. It could be health dept staff, medical personnel, law enforcement, firefighters, daycare staff, etc. 

Course Requirements: Checkup event attendance is required for certification, and 100% attendance is required for the entire course. 

Registration:To register for the course, please visit cert.safekids.org. It will be during the online registration process that the $95 fee will be collected. KLETC will NOT collect SAFE KIDS fees. 
This is a controlled course through SAFE KIDS. This fee covers all materials, certification costs, and certificates associated with the program. Those interested in enrolling in the class will have to create a username and password at the Safe Kids Web Page and then search for the class. If help is needed in finding the class on the website or registering, contact Cindi Callaway at 620.218.5620. 
You will receive an email from the lead instructor (Cindi Callaway) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the course. Please keep ccllaway@dccca.org as a safe contact on your device. Participants are responsible for all travel-related expenses, including meals and lodging, other than lunches provided by the training organization on training days. Lunch and snacks will be provided on training days by the training organizations.

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online t: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
