The State of Kansas created criminal statutes in 2017 to combat the creation and dissemination of both self-produced and/or internet trading of both nude materials and sexually explicit materials of children with an emphasis regarding juveniles trading this type of material. Securing volatile digital evidence is key to successful investigations and prosecutions.
With the move to mobile devices and cloud-based services the need for a quick response is critical to successful collection of digital evidence. This training focuses on the history of the role of a first responder regarding sexual exploitation of children and the digital evidence collection required by law enforcement. Participants will be given case studies along with practical exercises to gain hands-on training to similar situations they are faced with while on patrol.
Topics covered are a history of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task force to basic understanding of the profession of computer forensics and its role in today's volatile digital evidence world. Participants will gain an understanding of the use of several venues and software currently available to collect and memorialize volatile digital evidence.
Participants will be able to decide upon prescribed courses of action or techniques that will provide a greater level of safety in a school environment, event or situation.
Participants will employ best practices as they investigate any crime from its beginning to its eventual disposition; either as an individual, or as part of an investigatory team.
Participants will produce clearly written, intelligent and accurate representations of events and situations and provide accurate testimony and descriptions of those events when requested to do so. Participants will also act in ways that support the needs of the community and profession, while carrying out the responsibilities of an officer and a member of their respective community.
Identify sexual exploitation of a child material and its direct correlation to hands-on sexual abuse offenders.
Identify and separate criminal offenses pertaining to the creation and dissemination of visual depiction of a child type material and sexually explicit type material of individuals 12 or more years of age but less than 18 years of age.
Identify and gain knowledge of software used to memorialize volatile digital evidence.
Identify cloud based digital evidence.
Identify effective investigative tools.
Identify resources necessary for successful prosecution of sexual exploitation of children.
