DESCRIPTION:Event: Butterflies, Birds and Bees\n\nWe'll dive deeper into the biology and beauty of our favorite pollinators: butterflies, birds and bees! Monarch butterflies are an iconic insect that has experienced population decline in recent years. Learn more about monarch butterflies, from basic biology to less known and fascinating observations. We'll consider the facts in the context of monarch conservation and what you can do to support monarch. In addition, we'll get to see monarch eggs, caterpillars and butterflies up close so you can be prepared to identify any activity in your home garden. Birds are pollinators, too! But their interaction with pollinating insects tells a much larger story about the connections that sustain our natural ecosystems. Jennifer will give an overview of bird population trends in North America, dive into Audubon's Plants for Birds program and end with a demonstration of the tools available to help you identify and learn about birds on your own. The final session will "bee" engaging, too! We'll learn about the types of bees in our area and how their populations are doing, things we can do to help them thrive and more. All three sessions will include hands-on activities!

Instructor Bio: Kristen Baum is the director of Monarch Watch, senior scientist with the Kansas Biological Survey and professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on the effects of land use and management practices, and weather extremes on monarchs, native bees and other pollinators.

Jennifer Delisle is a researcher with the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research, where she maintains information about the state's rarest plants and animals for the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory. She served on the board of directors of the Lawrence Bird Alliance for more than 20 years.

Victor Gonzalez earned his bachelor's degree in biology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá and his doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Kansas. He completed his postdoctoral research at the USDA Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management and Systematics Research Laboratory in Logan, Utah. Victor's research focuses on bee phylogeny and evolution, documenting patterns of diversity and investigating how bees respond to environmental stressors.

\n\nEvent Schedule:\n\n3 mtg\n\nEvent Location:\n\nSt Andrews Classroom\n1515 St. Andrews Drive\nLawrence, KS 66047
