This class will be facilitated by a member of the Attorney General's staff. Examples of Kansas human trafficking cases from Kansas communities, rural areas and schools will be discussed by law enforcement and Kansas ICAC will provide instruction on investigations into social media, open sources and online evidence collection. Child sex trafficking in Kansas is on the increase. The internet and social media make recruiting victims easier, mobile phones and prepaid credit cards allow untraceable contacts between pimps, johns and victims. Recent changes in Kansas laws now provide additional ways for law enforcement to combat trafficking and there are additional changes in the law for victims of human trafficking, particularly for those under 18 years of age. The law mandates law enforcement to take juvenile victims into police protective custody and there is a recently changed protocol for handling juvenile victims. The class will cover the investigation of trafficking at motels, routine car stops, domestic violence calls and schools. The class will provide examples of Kansas cases, the indicators of human trafficking, as well as investigation techniques.
