Course detail: Report Writing for Law Enforcement

Course Description:
Law enforcement officers must rely upon their ability to communicate clearly through the written word in order to document events so that reports can be later reviewed for use in court, so an accurate record of criminal or tortious activity can be kept, or so that warrants or other orders can be secured from the court. This course is designed to introduce the student to the various documents that law enforcement personnel and professionals may need to write, the legal requirements necessary to obtain warrants and orders from the court, and strategies for communicating important details of events succinctly and accurately.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to:
  • Identify and describe the various reports, narratives, and affidavits a law enforcement professional may be called upon to write
  • Differentiate between the purposes of a report or narrative and an affidavit
  • Identify the requirements for obtaining a search warrant or arrest warrant
  • Describe the importance of writing clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports and affidavits
  • Demonstrate the ability to accurately describe events in written form
