Course Detail: NICM - Walking Tour: Nicollet Mall
Nicollet Avenue has been Minneapolis' main shopping street for more than 100 years. In the 1960's, in an effort to compete with suburban shopping malls that were drawing customers away from downtown, eight blocks of the street were closed to automobile traffic, creating the Nicollet Mall. The 2017 renovation created a greener, more pedestrian-friendly street. In addition to the history of the Mall itself, we'll discover the histories of more than a dozen structures that line the mall, from 1898's Renaissance Square to Orchestra Hall to Peavey Plaza. The Nicollet Mall tour will begin under the main entrance canopy on the west end of the Voya Financial Building at 20 S Washington Ave. Park wherever you can find a spot. There are parking meters and ramps all around the area.
