Course Detail: MFG120 - Introduction to CNC Machining

Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic machining methods and the fundamentals of CNC machining.
Learn fundamental operations and safety procedures for a machine shop.

Initial topics to be covered are horizontal/vertical bandsaw, drill press, lathe operation, using the lathe to form threads, and mill operations. Following these manual operations, CNC coordinate systems, tool offsets and functions and other introductory CNC topics will be covered. This course is designed to be valuable to shop owners and industrial workers needing more familiarity with CNC machining, engineers needing a more complete understanding of shop floor practices and calculations, CNC operators who need a better understanding of the components and execution of a CNC program.

Course Highlights:
♦ Metal cutting (horizontal/vertical bandsaw)
♦ Drill press (speed calculations)
♦ Milling (speed calculations, climb/conventional milling)
♦ Lathe operation (speed calculations, tool setting, feed rate, thread cutting)

Instructor John Mitchell is the Manager of Mechanical Services at IPFW. He has degrees in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Technology and over 40 years of experience working in the industry, specifically CNC Installation, Set-up, Maintenance, and Programming.
