Dr. Michelle Drouin presents: Social Media & Technology 101 for Practitioners: Promises and Perils
This talk will give an overview of the ways in which social media can be used in positive ways within health, wellness, and outreach organizations and also the ways in which social media might be being used by teens and young adults to inflict harm and support unsafe/unhealthy lifestyle choices. I will also cover issues relating to teen and young adult relationship health, including sexting, sexting coercion, intimate partner violence, and polyvictimization.
Clinton Faupel presents: From Snapchat to Sexting - How Teens Feel About Digital Expression
With over 62,000 chat conversations in 2016, Clinton Faupel of RemedyLIVE.com will share the trends and opinions they've gleaned from over 25,000 clients in their 24/7 chat center. Attendees can expect to learn these trends as well as data collected through polling 50 Northeast Indiana Public Schools during the 2016/2017 school year. Clinton will also share the correlation he sees between digital expression and what he calls "the secret struggle."
Biography: Dr. Michelle Drouin is a developmental psychologist (B.A. Cornell University, D.Phil. University of Oxford), professor, and internationally-recognized speaker on technology and relationships, including online relationships, social media, and sexting. Dr. Drouin's research on sexting, social media, and mobile phone addiction has attracted international attention, and she regularly does interviews for television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Her research has been cited in a number of prominent news sources including CNN, NPR, MSNBC, CBS News, The New York Times, Huffington Post, Reuters, Men's Health, Parenting Magazine, and Psychology Today. Dr. Drouin also serves as an expert witness for sexting, social media, and online relationship cases.
Biography: Clinton Faupel is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of RemedyLIVE, a web based crisis center that provides 24/7 hope and live chat interaction for young adults that are struggling with secret issues in their life. Clinton has been working with teens since 1989 and strives to innovate how institutions can better engage youth and young adults at the core of their identity. Clinton speaks to over 100,000 people per year about how secret struggles do not need to have the final say on their future. He's passionate about helping young people with mental health issues and outfitting parents and educators on how to approach the youth they have a relationship with. Clinton is an interactive communicator who uses proprietary technology, he helped create, to engage his audience. Raised in Western Canada, Clinton moved to the United States in 2001 to serve amidst urban youth. He is an ordained minister with the Missionary Church USA and speaks around the country, about messy issues, to people of all ages.
