James Ave
Dr. Jim Ave brings extensive expertise in athletic training, physical education, and curriculum development to his work at Fresno Pacific University, where he has served since 1998. He earned a PhD in Human Performance-Teaching and Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, an MA in Education-Curriculum and Instruction from Cal State, Bakersfield, and a BS in Athletic Training from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Ave served as head athletic trainer from 1998 to 2005 and has been the Kinesiology program director since 2005. As a Certified Athletic Trainer, he is passionate about caring for athletes and physically active individuals while helping students connect academic learning to professional and personal experiences. He has also used his gifts for program and curriculum development to create new courses and academic opportunities at Fresno Pacific University. A Riverside, California, native who now lives in Fresno, Dr. Ave is a member of Clovis Evangelical Free Church and seeks to glorify Jesus Christ through his teaching and service.

Sport First Aid
This course is designed to provide an introduction to sports first aid injury prevention. It involves fulfilling the role of being a competent first responder to athletic injuries and illness. Many state high school associations, colleges and universities, and national governing bodies currently use, require, or recommend coach education in whole or in part to meet coaching education requirements for their organizations.

Concussion in Sports
This course is designed to provide an introduction to sport concussions. Included are an introduction to brain anatomy, causes of concussions and what happens to the brain when some one sustains a concussion; sign and symptoms and short and long-term effects associated with concussions; review of different concussion assessment/evaluation tools; examination of return to-play protocols; how to prevent concussions; treatment and rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained concussions; concussions in professional sport; and current trends and research on concussions.

Taping for Sports
Discover the purposes and methods of using various taping techniques to support and protect injuries to bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and joints of the body. Be introduced to basic anatomy as it is related to taping and foundational taping techniques for lower body and upper body injuries.

Coaching Baseball
It has been said that to be an excellent coach, one has to be an excellent teacher. The purpose of this class is to teach tactical and technical skills baseball so that you can be an excellent baseball coach. In addition, you'll be taught how to effectively design practice, in-season, off-season plans, and game plans.

In this course, students will learn what foam rolling is designed to do and how to perform it safely and correctly.

Pilates is a popular low-impact exercise technique. It can be used to improve many aspects of physical fitness such as strength, flexibility, coordination, speed, agility, and endurance. Pilates also enhances body control and awareness, reduces aches and pains, increases balance, improves performance, and accelerates recovery. In this course, students will learn what pilates is designed to do and how to perform it safely and correctly.

Grit: Passion & Perseverance: Book Application

In this class, you will discover what psychologist Angela Duckworth's research has learned about high achievers in her book Grit: The power of passion and perseverance. Her book provides a research-based explanation of her Grit theory, how to develop grit internally and externally and how passion and perseverance relate to social emotional learning (SEL).

Achievement-Based Curriculum for PE
Develop an understanding of Kelly and Melograno's Achievement Based Curriculum (ABC) for creating or revising physical education curriculum. The ABC model is used to develop, revise and implement K-12 standards-based physical education curricula. This course is designed to satisfy The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) National Standards and Grade-Level for K-12 Physical Education and various State standards for physical education.
