Course Detail: SGC-1102 - Foundations of Aviation Cybersecurity Leadership and Technical Management in co-operation with ICAO [In-Person]

Overview

A foundational course in aviation cybersecurity for those with either a leadership background in security, cybersecurity, safety, or technical management responsibilities. By the end of the 40-hour course, attendees will have actionable competencies they will be able to apply in their workplace. Both the Leadership and the Technical Management tracks will be covered.

Learning Objectives

To better understand the concepts and processes of aviation cybersecurity, participants can attend both the Leadership track and the Technical Management track. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will have an understanding of:

Modules Modules 1-8:

How technology underpins all aviation systems and how technology is connected
Interdependencies between aviation safety and cybersecurity
Why and how adversaries attack systems, using examples and working through attack phases
Identifying and scoping cybersecurity critical systems within aviation
Regulatory and legal considerations of aviation cybersecurity
The importance and value of aviation cybersecurity culture

Modules 9-16: Leadership Track

Cybersecurity governance and oversight
Cybersecurity risk management and assessment
Managing supply chain risk
Information sharing
Staff awareness and training

Modules 17-24: Technical Management Track

Identity and access management
Data Security
System Security
Resilient networks and systems

Modules 25-28:

Participants will gain an understanding of the value and elements of practical exercises by participating in the course Tabletop Cybersecurity Incident Exercise. This exercise uses an aviation-based scenario, combining both leadership and technical aspects of cybersecurity. The exercise brings together all the elements in the course and puts into practice the course learning outcomes. The Tabletop exercise also provides a real-world example of how such exercises are utilized as practical learning tools for any organization.

Biography: Dr. Krishna Sampigethaya is currently the Chair for the Department of Cyber Intelligence and Security at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ, a DHS/NSA designated Center of Academic Excellence for Cyber Defense and offering one of the world's few ABET accredited cybersecurity degree programs. Dr. Sampigethaya received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Washington (2007) and was one of the first in the world to defend a thesis on connected vehicle privacy and aviation cyber security research. He then joined The Boeing Company and was soon selected as the first Boeing Associate Technical Fellow for aviation cyber-physical security in 2012. More recently he was the first Associate Director for cyber security at the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Research Center (2016-2018), focusing on the security of aerospace systems and commercial products. He has also been an Assistant Director for the Masters in Telecom program at the University of Maryland (2014-2015), developing new courses on software-defined networks and connected vehicles.Dr. Sampigethaya founded the first aviation cyber security technical committee, sponsored by the SAE in 2008, and has been organizing aviation cyber security tracks at SAE as well as AIAA/IEEE conferences since then. He has served on the RTCA SC-216 standard committee working jointly with EUROCAE WG-72 (2017-2018). He co-edited the first special issue on cyber-physical systems, published in the first centennial year issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE journal (2012). He has authored over 50 papers-including 3 award-winning publications-delivered over 16 keynotes, and holds over 16 US patents in aviation CPS security. His work has been recognized in the community with awards such as the American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin (ASEI) Engineer of the Year Award (2013), ASEI Corporate Engineering Excellence Award (2013), and a Best Instructor Award at UMD (2015).
