Overview

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's (ERAU) Airport Operational Safety and Certification course provides a review and analysis of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for aerodrome/airport certification and Member State compliance. Operational safety standards, issues, and risk criteria for airports are also addressed. Specific topics include Airport Safety Manuals, safety self-inspections, runway safety, ramp safety, Airport Rescue firefighting (ARFF), wildlife management, and aerodrome/airport Safety Management Systems. Exemplars of US and other national regulations, advisory guidance, and best practices are incorporated. Application is specific to airport planning and design and airport operational risk management.

This course awards 2 Continuing Education Units (CEU) upon completion.

This course is one of five courses that may be taken individually or toward satisfaction of Embry-Riddle's Airport Risk Management and Safety professional education certificate requirements.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive and broad-based understanding of airport safety and certification, including:

  • Application of airport certification requirements ( FAA and ICAO) and the involvement of both oversight agencies and the airport in compliance issues.
  • Application of Airport/Aerodrome Emergency Planning requirements.
  • Analysis of airport index requirements with respect to airport aircraft rescue and firefighting facilities, training, and equipment, as set forth in national and ICAO Annex 14 and ICAO Document 9137.
  • Analysis of the requirement for airport self-inspection and corrective actions, in accordance with applicable regulations and the application to Safety Management Systems.
  • Identification, assessment, and development of mitigation strategies to comply with wildlife management requirements both from the standpoint of protection and control.
  • Identification, evaluation, and development of risk factors associated with runway safety.
  • Assessment of Safety Management Systems applications effectiveness in airport planning and design and/or risk management.

Course Information

This is an online asynchronous instructor facilitated course with weekly modules and assignments, but no scheduled meeting times. Students should plan to spend approximately 10-15 hours per week working through the course. Coursework is web-based with no additional software required, although a reliable internet connection is recommended. All courses open 48 business hours in advance of each start date, and must be completed by their scheduled end dates. Digital certificates are available upon successful completion of individual courses. Printed certificates are mailed only upon completion of a full certificate program.
