Overview

The Aviation SMS three-day course, developed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, provides participants with an expanded background in intermediate and advanced Safety Management Systems (SMS) concepts, and supports both implementation and continuous improvement of an active SMS within their organization. Through a focus on practical strategies for maturing safety management practices, attendees will develop tools to implement the theory and principles of SMS as well as an understanding of current FAA guidance and requirements for operators and organizations.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you'll be equipped to: 

  • Articulate the core theories and concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS)
  • Understand the pivotal role of safety culture within an SMS
  • Apply relevant regulatory requirements to your organization's SMS
  • Implement the principles of Safety Risk Management effectively
  • Recognize the importance of Safety Assurance in maintaining an SMS
  • Outline SMS training requirements and their impact on safety culture
  • Integrate existing programs for Occupational Health & Safety, Emergency Response, and decision-making into a cohesive systems approach
  • Develop and execute an SMS implementation plan, including conducting a gap analysis
  • Apply fundamental business theories to evaluate SMS effectiveness and return on investment (ROI)

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Embry-Riddle will award 2.1 CEUs to each attendee who successfully completes the course. Each attendee will receive a Certificate of Completion for completing the course.

Cancellation Policy

A cancellation charge of $150 will be assessed on any standard cancellations. A late cancellation charge of 25% of the course registration fee will be assessed on cancellations occurring within 14 days of the start of the course.
