Course Detail: SSAC - Space Situational Awareness (SSA)

Overview

[COMING SOON]This online course introduces the practice of optical (astrometric) space situational awareness of earth orbiting objects. Topics covered include the space object population, basic orbital mechanics, coordinate transformations, processing of space images (to include thresholding, edge detection, centroiding of objects and plate solving), identification of space objects in an image collect, data association of objects across collects, and initial and precise orbit determination of objects from the data obtained. Several examples involving real imagery will be provided. The course will review components on SSA of active (transmitting) objects via RF sensing, global vs local SSA and SSA in Cislunar (Earth/Moon) space.

Who Should Attend

  • DoD project managers at operational space agencies looking to understand the mechanics of SSA missions
  • DoD engineers at experimental space agencies looking to conduct (or outsource) these kinds of activities themselves
  • Small or large business contractors who design SSA missions
  • Engineers, aerospace manufacturers, military and government agencies

Course Modality

This is an online asynchronous instructor facilitated course with weekly modules and scheduled office hours with a subject matter expert. Students should plan to spend approximately up to 10 hours per week working through the course. Coursework is web-based, and the following pre-requisite knowledge is preferred but not mandatory: (1) a basic understanding of the orbital mechanics of Earth-orbiting space objects; (2) proficiency in (and access to) Matlab, Python, or other computational programming language. The online course will open 48 business hours in advance of the start date, and must be completed by the scheduled end date.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Embry-Riddle will award Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to each attendee who successfully completes the course. Each attendee will receive a digital Certificate of Completion for completing the course.

Cancellation Policy

A cancellation charge of $150 will be assessed on any standard cancellations. A late cancellation charge of 25% of the course registration fee will be assessed on cancellations occurring within 14 days of the start of the course.
