Course Detail: OIEDHON - ECU Honors Seminar in Economic Development
This seminar is a day seminar designed for volunteer leaders who wish to have a more in depth understanding of the dynamics of place-based economic development in order to make better choices,evaluate decisions, and set priorities.

This seminar will allow volunteer leaders to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of key terms and concepts related to economic development
- Describe the base economy, market area,traded clusters, and supply chains
- Determine the concepts and strategies most applicable to their community needs
- Understand the difference between economic growth and economic development
- Understand the importance of the Triple Helix approach to economic development
- Articulate realistic goals for their community

Who Should Attend

This seminar is intended for volunteers, community leaders, elected officials, and citizens who are interested in learning more about place-based economic development. Each participants will receive a certificate of completion from ECU. The convening organization will be eligible for designation as an ECU Economic Development Partner.

Cancellation Policy


Requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Office of Continuing Studies at cpe@ecu.edu. Requests received prior to the start of the online course/program will be eligible for a 75% refund. Requests received no later than one week after the start of the online course/program will be eligible for a 50% refund. Those received after the first week will not receive a refund.

Biography: Charles has been a leader in economic development in NorthCarolina. He served as President and CEO of the Research TriangleRegional partnership for two decades until retiring from the positionin June 2016. During his tenure the partnership received numerousawards internationally and nationally, and was widely known forcutting-edge initiatives including the Triple Helix approach toinnovation and economic development. Before moving to theResearch Triangle Regional Partnership, Charles served as directorof a local economic development agency, county manager, businessowner and community college instructor.Charles has served in leadership roles on numerous Boards andProfessional Associations, including the University Of North CarolinaBoard Of Governors, the East Carolina Board of Visitors, theInternational Economic Council and is a former President of the NorthCarolina Economic Developers Association. Additionally, he and hiswife, Jan, have recently formed Hayes Group Consulting LLC andboth serve as Managing Partners. A native North Carolinian,originally from Norlina, Charles has undergraduate and Master'sdegrees from East Carolina University and is a Vietnam veteran. No image available
