This module is designed to increase your expertise and comfort in using quality diverse texts for students in K-12 classrooms. Participants will build on the knowledge from the "What's On Your Shelf?" module to go deeper into what it means to build culturally responsive communities within our classrooms using diverse texts. This module will help participants to build on their students' funds of knowledge, create lessons that affirm and validate all students' identities while integrating teaching standards. Participants will also explore the role of writing in response to texts and using writing and texts to connect to the lived experiences of students.

Stress is America's number one health problem. Research shows that between 75% and 90% of visits to primary care physicians directly result from stress-related disorders. Most people are unaware of the adverse effects of stress, and some do not recognize stress in their lives. Biofeedback allows people to "see" how stress affects their overall well-being and healthily cope with stress.

Biofeedback is a treatment technique whereby people learn to improve and maintain their health using signals from their bodies. Noninvasive sensors are placed on the body to determine physiological changes stimulated through the fight-or-flight response. These measures include heart rate variability, skin temperature, skin conductance, respiration rate, muscle function, and brain activity. Therapists, who use biofeedback as a treatment tool, train people to alter brain activity, blood pressure, heart rate, and other body functions that clients often believe to be involuntary. Eventually, the client attains improved self-regulation without the aid of these devices.

The Center for Applied Psychophysiology (CAP) at East Carolina University offers biofeedback coursework to prepare professionals for private lab and supervision training--we may be able to provide lab access and mentorship for professionals in North Carolina (see Mentorship section below). Completing the coursework meets the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) didactic education (42-hour) requirement and follows their Blueprint of Knowledge. Our goal is to offer you the knowledge and skills necessary to use biofeedback as a treatment intervention or performance enhancement technique.

This course will cover statutes such as the National Labor Relations Act, the Railway Labor Act, and other various statutes dealing with public employees. Topics to be included are master and servant, wages and hours, anti-discrimination in employment and minimum wages and maximum hours, as well as regulation of working conditions.

Participants will explore what fluency is and how it impacts reading proficiency. They will learn the true definition of fluency and the criteria that defines a fluent reader, the developmental stages of a fluent reader, and how to develop and foster fluency in reading. Participants will also learn different ways that fluency can be assessed and methods that can be used for teaching for fluency and practicing fluency. Participants will have the opportunity to observe videos and explore websites with lesson ideas that they can use in their own classroom.

All engineers should be particularly concerned with patent law. This constitutionally-based discipline has to do with the process by which an invention, and its creator, are protected by the law from infringement and unfair competition. The class will deal with patent applications, research and prosecution; the law of infringement, and computer applications of software (protected by copyright) and hardware (by patents). We will also state what other concepts are patented, as well as machines, processes, mixtures, manufacturing, compositions of materials and methods of doing business and research. Not only do we deal with utility patents, but with design and plant patents as well.

This course is a sequel to the Universe Story. It will pick up "the story" with a focus on the human. We will consider the origin of some of our basic body parts and then acquaint ourselves with our immediate hominoid ancestors: Lucy (about 4-6 million years ago), Homo habilis (2 to 1.65 million years ago), Homo erectus (1.5 to 1.9 million years ago), Neanderthals (40,000 years ago). Our goal is to develop a better appreciation of our origins, our evolutionary history, so that we have a better understanding of our proper place in the Universe as humans (Homo Sapiens - 300,000 years ago to the present).

Exploring Oyster Ecology is an educational opportunity for families with children aged 5 and older. Instructors will lead the public in a fun, interactive lesson about oysters and their vital role in our estuaries. Participants will get an up-close look at live oysters, investigate the organisms they interact with, and head home with a craft, too! This program will finish with time to decorate an oyster holiday ornament. Events will be offered on November 15 and December 13 from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Coastal Studies Institute located at 850 NC 345, Wanchese, NC 27981. These programs are open to the public with limited availability on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cost is $10/person. Wednesday, December 13, 2023, Coastal Studies Institute

In this three-hour workshop you will be guided and assisted through the process of making your very own, handmade drinking glass. Molten glass will be gathered from a 2100�F furnace and participants will apply and melt in their choice of colors. You will then be guided through the process of inflating a bubble, shaping it into a cylinder, and ultimately finishing it by opening the top and finishing the shape of a nice cup.To finish your piece, it will be knocked off the pipe and the instructors will place the piece in a 900-degree oven to anneal.To prevent it from cracking, glass must be cooled slowly for at least 12 hours. Artwork made during a glass the workshop must cool in an annealing oven and will be available for pick-up later.
