Course Detail: BIOETHICS1 - Introduction to Research Ethics for the Health Professional

Introduction to Research Ethics for the Health Professional is offered jointly by the Department of Bioethics and Interdisciplinary Studies, Brody School of Medicine and East Carolina University Academic Outreach, Continuing and Distance Education. The course introduces health professionals in practice to the ethics of human subject, animal, and tissue research. Ethical theory and principles are introduced, followed by a brief history of research ethics.Topics covered in taped lectures and moderated discussions include foundations of ethical research and professional codes, application of ethical principles in human and animal research, roles and responsibilities in ethical research,and applying research ethics across settings in health care . Student evaluation will be based on participation in moderated discussion forums,research ethics case, applied ethical analysis, and a pre-post test to measure the objective learning outcomes. 

Credit and Contact Hours

The course is comprised of four modules completed over an eight week period and accounts for 40 hours of time (4.0 CEU).

This course qualifies as a required core course in the acquisition of a Certificate in Applied Health Care Ethics, a five course series.
