Course Detail: CSISHIP - Coastal Studies Institute Program - Who Left this Ship Here?

Founded in 2003, the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) is an inter-university marine science research and education institute located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The K-12 programs offered at CSI align with both NC Essential Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the programs utilize the current research projects of CSI faculty and scientists to provide students with a unique, engaging experience that will make scientific concepts relevant. Programs include field based programs and laboratory investigations.

The Coastal Studies Institute welcomes groups of up to 60 students at a time. Please contact us in advance if larger group arrangements are needed. Programs will last 1.5 hours in length. Students will learn and work in the same environment where scientists are conducting research on important issues to North Carolina.

Students will "uncover" the identity of a mock shipwreck at CSI through measurements, data collection and archaeological techniques. They will discover the unique maritime history of this area of North Carolina and will learn measuring, math and drawing techniques to document what remains of the ship.Standards: 5.C.1, 5.g.1, 6.E.1, 8.H.1, 8.H.2, 8.E.1, 8.L.E
