Course Detail: CSIENERGY - Coastal Studies Institute Program - Renewable Ocean Energy

Students will learn about CSI's mission to extract energy from ocean waves, currents and tides. Participants will view technology used in ocean research, participate in a series of activities to understand the process of harnessing power from the ocean and learn the basics of oceanographic processes. This program can be taught at a middle or high school level to address the standards listed below.

Standards: 5.P.2, 6.P.1.1, 6.E.1.1, 6.E.2.2, 7.P.2, 7.E.1, 8.P.2, 8.E.1, PSc.3.1, PSc.3.2, PSc.3.3, EEn.2.8, Phy.2.1, Phy.2.2, Phy.2.3

VISITING SCHOOL GROUP PROGRAMS

Founded in 2003, the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) is an inter-university marine science research and education institute located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The K-12 programs offered at CSI align with both NC Essential Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the programs utilize the current research projects of CSI faculty and scientists to provide students with a unique, engaging experience that will make scientific concepts relevant. Programs include field based programs and laboratory investigations.

The Coastal Studies Institute welcomes groups of up to 60 students at a time. Please contact us in advance if larger group arrangements are needed. Programs will last 1.5 hours in length. Students will learn and work in the same environment where scientists are conducting research on important issues to North Carolina.

RENEWABLE OCEAN ENERGY

CSI is currently leading a research program which focuses on capturing energy from ocean waves and currents to create usable electricity. This educational programs highlights the work done by the Institute, and provides students with hands-on activities that teach them scientific concepts used in electricity and ocean processes. Students will explore the same concepts used to in power generation from ocean waves and currents.
