Course Detail: LLPRW - Book Talk on Richard Wright's Native Son
In Fall 2018, EbzB Productions is bringing Ian Finley's two-man play called Native to ECU and the Greenville/Eastern North Carolina community. Finley's play dramatizes the collaboration between North Carolina playwright Paul Green (author of The Lost Colony) and African American novelist Richard Wright to adapt Wright's novel Native Son for Broadway. The story of their collaboration on the UNC Chapel Hill campus (before the campus was desegregated) is a provocative one, which the instructor has researched extensively for an essay published in Mississippi Quarterly on the occasion of Wright's 100th birthday. Prior to the play, she will lead a discussion with Lifelong Learners of the novel and its dramatic adaptation; then after the play (Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00pm) a discussion of the play and her article on the collaboration. Lifelong Learners will be asked to read the novel in advance of the book discussion and are encouraged to attend the play at ECU. Then they will be asked to read Dr. Bauer's essay after seeing the play, for discussion during the group's second class meeting.
