While older adults are at increased risk of adverse outcomes, inappropriate antibiotic use impacts individuals of all ages and can result in increased health care costs and death. During this session, attendees will be provided a brief overview of the history of antibiotic use and how it has led to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Attendees will discuss when it may be appropriate to request or be prescribed an antibiotic, learn some of the possible side effects that should be reported to a healthcare provider, and ways to maximize the benefits associated with appropriate antibiotic use.
